Sazerac

Sazerac

The Sazerac is a classic cocktail with a rich history and a distinctive flavor. It was invented in New Orleans in the 19th century and has since become a popular drink around the world.

The origin of the Sazerac can be traced back to the 1850s, when it was first served at the Sazerac Coffee House in New Orleans. The original recipe called for Sazerac de Forge et Fils cognac, which was imported from France and became the drink's namesake. Over time, the recipe evolved to include American rye whiskey as the base spirit, and the Sazerac became one of the first cocktails to be made with an American whiskey.

One fun fact about the Sazerac is that it is the official cocktail of the state of Louisiana. It was designated as such in 2008, and today it is a beloved symbol of New Orleans and its rich cultural history.

To make a Sazerac, you will need the following

Ingredients:

2 ounces rye whiskey

1 sugar cube

3 dashes Peychaud's bitters

1 dash Angostura bitters

1 splash absinthe

lemon peel

Instructions:

In a mixing glass, muddle the sugar cube and bitters together until the sugar is dissolved.

Add the rye whiskey and a few ice cubes to the mixing glass and stir until the mixture is well chilled.

Rinse a chilled old-fashioned glass with the absinthe and discard any excess.

Strain the whiskey mixture into the absinthe-rinsed glass.

Garnish with a lemon peel and serve immediately.

Enjoy your Sazerac!
